Description:
The town of Camarones, in the province of Chubut, Argentina, is in a stage of transformation, driven by the recent creation of the Patagonia Azul Provincial Park. The Port of Camarones, traditionally linked to fishing activity, is projected as a strategic node both for tourism development and a diversification of economic activities is foreseen. In the locality, aquaculture activity is focused on mussel cultivation (Mytilus platensis), developed for both educational and commercial purposes. The most relevant project is that of School 721 "Caleta Hornos", which produces between 3 and 5 tons per year, using seed capture technology and long-line cultivation systems. In addition, there is a family enterprise of artisanal scale that also reaches a production of up to 3 tons per year. The production is mainly destined for local consumption, supplying restaurants, residents and tourists. The activity faces challenges such as the limited availability of seed and the need to strengthen infrastructure and institutional support, but it represents an opportunity for local economic development and productive diversification in the region.In this context, technical assistance is needed to identify existing and projected demand in order to define the design of a port infrastructure preliminary project, in line with a vision of sustainable and multisectoral development of the region that strengthens the current (fishing) and projected (tourism and aquaculture) value chains in harmony with the natural environment in which the Port of Camarones is located The PROBLUE Program, a multidonor trust fund administered by the World Bank, supports sustainable development of marine and coastal resources, reducing marine pollution including plastics, protecting critical ecosystems, and generating green jobs.
